How to create a post
At the top right of the thread interface, you will see a button marked "Reply." In order to create a post in the thread, click this.
One you have opened up the post interface, it will look like this (see below for reference on what everything does):
Much of this interface is already familiar if you're acquainted with word processors like Microsoft Word.
However, the rightmost group of buttons won't be familiar, so you'll learn to use those.
1. The Link button, marked (1), allows you to link to a page, or any URL. Simply select the text that you want to make clickable for the link, and then click the link button, paste in the URL, and click Create Link.
2. Next to that, the Email button (2) works similarly, but is for creating a link to send an e-mail to a specific address.
3. Insert Image (3) is for embedding an image hosted at an external site. This is one of two ways to add in an image, and is the method I've used for the screen captures above.
4. You'll use Insert Video (4) to embed video streams from YouTube, Vimeo, or any other video platform. Again, simply paste the shareable video URL into the field; for a shareable link, look for a "Share" button on your particular video website. The Insert Video option also allows you to choose the display size of the video.
5. If you want to link to the forums profile of an ELDF user, use Insert User Link (5).
6. After that is Insert Code (6). This is a special formatting tool that allows you to type monospace text with all formatting preserved, which is helpful mainly when posting code and script snippets. For example:
function closeWindow() {
mainWindow.close();
}
7. Insert Quote is the button marked (7). Note that this is NOT for quoting posts within the forum (in order to do that, you need to use the "Quote" button when viewing a post).
Rather, Insert Quote allows you to post quotes from a book or other source with clear delineation from your main post.
For example:
8. The next button is self-explanatory: Insert Smiley (8). Clicking this button gives you a mini-menu with smileys / emoticons you can use on the forum.
For example:
Note, however, that you can still use normal emojis, too:😊
9. Insert Embed (9) is for embedding social media posts or Google Drive documents.
10. Earlier, I mentioned two ways to post images. The second way is Edit Attachments (10). This allows you to upload a small-filesize image and either insert it inline, or attach it to the bottom of your post.
11. The Settings (11) button has other miscellaneous settings.
12. Finally, once you are done with your post, Create Post (12) will add it to the thread.
